Roomers at Flashing the Square 2014

The opportunity to present a text-based project on the Federation Square screens is unique. Flashing the Square aims to make this opportunity available not only to microfiction writers across Australia, through our microfiction competition, but also to provide an outlet for some of the robust and compelling writing that comes from local writers marginalised purely by their circumstances. As such we’re once again teaming with Roomers magazine to create a site-specific text based video element that will screen along with the Flashing the Square flash fiction videos, during the Melbourne Writers Festival.

Last year’s Roomers video was a great success, screening alongside the microfiction program. Flashing the Square is excited to again be working with the fantastic writers from Roomers, one of Melbourne’s most eclectic, talented and energetic writing communities.

Preparations for Flashing the Square 2014

With the lazy days of summer drawing to a close, Flashing the Square is gearing up for a great year in 2104. The expanded project will present a curated microfiction showcase with selected stories published both as videos, to be screened at Federation Square during the 2014 Melbourne Writers Festival, and as a collection to be published by Spineless Wonders, fantastic supporters of very short fiction, prose poetry, and short fiction.

Keep watching these pages for information about the Flashing the Square Microfiction Competition, a new literary prize offering writers opportunities to be involved in both the screen and publication components of the project (as well as a cash prize for the piece judged the best submission received).

There’ll also be regular updates about the video project and the collection as the project develops.
